What is COSE?

COSE is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

COSE lets Learning be Active and Focused

COSE allows tutors to create Learning Opportunities which provide "something to do" along with Resources (both inside and outside COSE), Media Objects, Assessments, and References to traditional non-electronic resources. This allows learners:

to see the link between assessment and learning activity

to view resources in the context of learning activity

to mix traditional and "e" learning

By allowing www-based and traditional non-electronic resources and lecture programmes to be referenced in the context of specific learning opportunities, COSE provides the focus for a blended approach to learning

to use the VLE as more than just a the delivery mechanism

COSE enables Learning to be Learner Centred

COSE is designed for courses with an output driven approach, where the emphasis is on the learning opportunities provided for learners and the resources needed to enable the learners to carry them out
COSE enables communication to take place at the appropriate level
COSE views a course as a group of people to whom learning opportunities are assigned, rather than as a body of content to which people are assigned
COSE allows simple and precise annotation of content by learners and tutors

COSE enables Learning to be Collaborative

COSE allows sharing of content, files and documents between tutors, learners, learners and tutors, tutor groups, learner (course) groups, and peer groups
COSE allows refreshable sharing of annotations between tutors, learners, learners and tutors, tutor groups, learner (course) groups, and peer groups providing a valuable feedback and collaboration tool
COSE allows electronic communication by the learner with tutor, resource author, learner (course) group and subgroups, and peer groups, thus ensuring communication takes place at the right level.
COSE provides group specific chat rooms and allows email from within COSE to be sent to the learners or tutors preferred email account.
