Chancellorship
The honorary position of Chancellor of Staffordshire University was created when the institution was awarded university status in 1992.
The first Chancellor was Lord Ashley of Stoke, former MP for Stoke-on-Trent South.
The University’s Chancellor, Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth OJ, stepped down in July 2011 following 7 years service.
The Chancellor’s role is representative, ceremonial and ambassadorial and the position has no formal powers or responsibilities in regard to the governance or management of the University.
The Chancellor presides over meetings of the Chancellor’s Forum and other appropriate meetings, receptions, functions and events either at and/or involving the University including the presentation of Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates and other academic awards.
The Board of Governors is looking to confirm the appointment of a new Chancellor at its next meeting in early October 2011.
Lord Bill Morris

The University’s Chancellor, Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth OJ, stepped down in July 2011 following 7 years service. As a working peer Lord Morris pledged to champion “those without a voice” and his well informed opinions are sought at the highest level. Lord Morris’s full title refers to Birmingham’s Handsworth district, the area where he lived on arrival from Jamaica to the UK in the 1950s. Read more about Lord Bill Morris »
