Committee and Board Structure

The University's Committee and Board Structure consists of nine main Academic Board Committees and six University Leadership Team Committees.

Academic Structure

The academic structure of the University is based around the following Faculties:

  • Faculty of Arts, Media And Design
  • Faculty of Business and Law
  • Faculty of Computing, Engineering And Technology
  • Faculty of Health
  • Faculty of Sciences

There are also a full range of Services designed to complement and enhance the work of the Faculties and provide in depth support for students and staff.

Research and Scholarship are fundamental to the work of the University and operates through a series of Institutes and Centres focused on individual Faculties and drawn together by the work of the Research and Enterprise officer. 

Terms of Reference

Subject to the requirements of validating and accrediting bodies as may be applicable, Academic Board is responsible for:

  • General issues relating to the research, scholarship, teaching and courses at the Institution including criteria for the admission of students; the appointment and removal of internal and external examiners; policies and procedures for assessment and examination of students; the content of the curriculum; academic standards and the validation and review of courses; the procedures for the award by the University of degrees and other qualifications and honorary academic titles in accordance with Section 76 of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992; and the procedures for the expulsion of students for academic reasons.
  • Considering the development of the academic activities of the University and the resources needed to support them and for advising the Vice-Chancellor and the Board of Governors thereon.
  • Advising on such matters as the Board of Governors or the Vice-Chancellor may refer to the Academic Board.

  • The Dean of Students and Academic Registrar (also Secretary to the Board)
  • The Director of Information Services
  • The Director of Research and Enterprise
  • The Head of the Academic Development Institute
  • The Director of Student Recruitment and Partnerships
  • The Director of Quality Improvement Services
  • The Faculty Directors for Learning and Teaching (4)
  • Three members of staff from each Faculty appointed by the Pro Vice Chancellors (12)
  • Two members of the teaching staff elected by the teaching staff as a whole 
  • One member of the professional support staff elected by the professional support staff as a whole
  • The President of the Students’ Union
  • One student representative (appointed by the President of the Students’ Union)
