New Generation X1 Low Emission Buses with Rail and WiFi Connection

Setting the standards for low emissions, Bakerbus has introduced three "hybrid" powered double decker buses on its premier X1 route between Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent and Beaconside, Stafford.

This is a popular route for students, as well as the public, as it provides local connections between the University and mainline railway stations.

The new vehicles are Volvo B5RLH Hybrids. Hybrid power technology is cleaner, producing about a third of the carbon emissions when compared to conventional diesel engines.  By using recycled energy, they are able to use 30 percent less fuel.  So as well as helping bus operators to keep operating costs down, they are showing the way forward towards a cleaner, healthier environment in the built up areas.  The Bakerbus vehicles were purchased with the help of the Department of Transport's Green Bus Fund.

Interest Free Rail Travel

Since March 2011, the University has provided assistance to staff wishing to get their commute back on the tracks, by providing an interest free loan of up to £2,500 towards the purchase of an annual rail ticket.

The added benefits of purchasing a season ticket through the scheme include:

  • 12 weeks travel free

  • Easy interest free repayments via salary deductions over 12 months

The scheme is administered in partnership with Northern rail, but staff can choose any operator service as their commute to work.

Terms and conditions apply.  Further details available under trains

Sustainable Travel

Sustain Staffs

For more information on Sustain Staffs visit our Sustain Staffs page.

Sustainable Travel

Staffordshire University is committed to reducing the impact of transport on the environment and we encourage visitors to use more sustainable forms of transport where possible.

Do you cycle to work?  For members of staff cycling to work, cycle parking facilities are available next to the security lodge and at various locations around the Beacon Building; the nearest shower and changing facilities are located at Beaconside Sports Centre.

Do you have an electric vehicle?  Staff who own an electrical vehicle can now use the University's free re-charging facility at Leek Road between 9.00am and 3.00pm.  Users are advised to check with the University campus lodge (stoke-lodge@staffs.ac.uk or 294837) before using the charge points.

The University has a comprehensive flexible working policy that can help staff reduce the number of miles they travel when commuting to work.  Staff should complete a Requesting Flexible Working for Caring Responsibilities form which can be used at their line managers' discretion for processes other than childcare responsibility.

Saving Waste & Energy

To get an idea of the volume of carbon dioxide emitted, one tonne of carbon dioxide would fill a balloon 10m in diameter.

Waste Recycling

The Executive office piloted the new waste segregation project and this has now been rolled out to the remainder of the University.  In addition, the Green Team have introduced a small cardboard recycling bin into this scheme and a compost corner for used tea bags.

STOP Wasting energy

Staff are encouraged to turn off all heaters and light switches in rooms that are unoccupied.   'STOP wasting energy'  and ‘Turn it Off’ red stickers have been placed next to all heaters and light switches.

Minimum Specification for New Appliances

When ordering new office electrical equipment it is good practice to ensure that all equipment is as energy efficient as possible.  For further information, visit the Energy Saving Trust

Print Less

28 million sheets of paper are printed every year at the University...

Help us to reduce this by:

  • Asking yourself if you really need to print

  • Always printing double-sided

  • Scanning and emailing documents

All Executive Team meetings have now become paperless with the introduction of iPads and the use of the V’tron system

Staff are encouraged to make use of the video-conferencing facilities where possible.
