History

Lichfield business village exterior view

Staffordshire University Lichfield Centre (SULC) is a joint venture between Staffordshire University and South Staffordshire College.

Phase 1 of the Centre opened in May 1998. It was built on a green field site in the heart of Lichfield. The site has a special status and is a conservation area in the Centre of the City.

Construction of Phase 2 was completed in September 2002 and more than doubled the size of the Centre. The Lichfield Business Village (LBV) was built as part of the Phase 2 development. The Business Village provides units which are let to new, growing and creative industries. Phase two also included expanded classroom space for the College and University, including rooms that allowed the College’s Art School to move from what was then, inadequate accommodation in old buildings and “prefab” classrooms.

Phase 3 of SULC was completed in 2005. The College needed more space and unilaterally funded this expansion. The building grew by half as much again. This allowed the art department of South Staffordshire College to move once again into more appropriate, “state of the art” purpose built rooms.

Our mission is to provide a dynamic learning and working environment that promotes the development of skills, knowledge, concepts and ideas that are relevant to the twenty first century, to be recognised as a leading, and quality, provider of learning opportunities within the region, and to be seen as being creative, innovative and resourceful. We wish to provide seamless progression from one level to another throughout the whole range of courses offered by University and College in Staffordshire. The rooms and resources are provided, funded by both institutions, for just these reasons.

The joint venture comes together here at the Lichfield Campus.

You will find staff at the Centre smiling and helpful. Teaching and administration staff are here from both South Staffordshire College and Staffs University. There is a dedicated core of staff that serve both institutions and their whole existence is to make the partnership work on a day-to-day basis. This group of staff form our Reception, Site Maintenance Team including cleaners, Helpdesk and Technicians (for the computer areas), Cafe and other administrative posts including Finance and Curriculum Support.
