Do Olympic role models exist, sports professionals and academics to debate

OLYMPIC role models and whether they exist is the topic of discussion at an event at Staffordshire University.

Olympic Role Models: Fact or Fiction will see a panel of sports professionals and leading academics from around Europe debating the subject.

They will be discussing three key themes; does the true spirit of the Olympic Games still exist; what are the consequences of drug taking in sport; and do high level athletes believe role models exist in their sport.

Vish Unnithan, Professor of Physical Activity, Exercise and Health at Staffordshire University, will be chairing the panel. He will be joined by:

  • Professor Stephen Wassong – Professor at the German Sport University Cologne, Head of the Institute of Sport History, Academic Director of the Olympic Studies Centre, and member of the International Olympic Committees Postgraduate Grant Selection Group.

  • Dr Pippa Bennett – Chief Medical Officer for the England Women’s Football Teams and Chief Medical Officer for British Gymnastics.

  • Rebecca Peake – The UK’s number one shot-putter who has competed in the Commonwealth Games, European Team Championships, European Cup, and is set to take part in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Professor Unnithan said: “We are very pleased to be joined by such an esteemed panel. I’m sure the debate will be a lively and very interesting one.

“With the London 2012 Olympic Games just around the corner, our event is Olympics themed and perfect for students, both at University or school and college, who are interesting in getting involved.

“Members of the public are welcome to attend and there will be a questions and answers session after the main discussion.”

Olympic Role Models: Fact or Fiction takes place at 10am on Friday, May 6, at Staffordshire University’s Leek Road Campus. Booking is essential. To reserve a place contact Nicola Smith on 01785 353679 or email n.d.smith@staffs.ac.uk.
