Firm foundations on which to grow caring career

Jonathan Brown is hoping his study experiences will encourage more men to consider Early Years education and care as a viable career option.
Jonathan, 38, from Penkridge opened the nursery at Chadsmoor Community Infant and Nursery School, Cannock in 2001 and has recently graduated with a Staffordshire University Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies.
And it’s not the only good news Jonathan has received this year – after the nursery was awarded its second ‘outstanding’ rating following an OFSTED inspection.
He said: “This was partly due to the course giving me the extra knowledge which I’ve been able to share with the nursery staff and so it has had an impact on their practice also.”
Although Jonathan was the only male to study on the course, he praised South Staffordshire College -where he studied for the Foundation degree - for making him feel valued.
Jonathan, who is married to District Nursing Sister, Katrina and has two daughters Sarah and Phillipa, added: “My aims are to remain as manager of the nursery while continuing my study to advance my knowledge and improve outcomes for young children.
“The course has given me an understanding of the underpinning theories and this is all helping to improve staff morale. The rewards are just immense – to be able to assist young children to attain their optimal potential and to be seen as a positive male role model is everything!”
