Old rivals to get revved up on the racetrack

Porsche racing carStudents from rival Universities will get the opportunity to compete on the racetrack during a heated motorsport spectacular.

The Staffordshire University Motorsport Society (SUMS) wants to open up the exciting and highly competitive world of motorsport, with the first of an annual karting competition, giving students of all ages and abilities the chance to race.

The Staffordshire University Karting Championship (SUKC) will give students the chance to try something new, indulge in an existing passion, or just help to raise the profile of motorsport within the University.

With the competition also open to students from local rivals Keele University, with a coveted Staffs versus Keele championship, the fast and furious contest is bound to heat up.

Matthew Meir, SUMS Team Manager and Marshall Coordinator, said: “The Championships will provide students with a low-cost and highly competitive environment in which they can hone their driving skills and experience the thrills of motorsport.”

“Whilst it may not produce the next Lewis Hamilton, the Championship will give all competitors the opportunity of racing on one of the best outdoor circuits in the country, under varying weather and lighting conditions.”

The competition will take place over six rounds throughout the year, with several driver classes to compete for, giving drivers of all abilities a chance to shine.

The first round begins at 2:30pm on Wednesday 21 November, at Midland Karting, Woodland Lane, Lichfield, with entry cost per round at £30 for society members and £40 for non-society members.
