CoRE: the Centre of Refurbishment Excellence

Stoke-on-Trent has been selected to host the Centre of Refurbishment Excellence (CoRE). The area has a high proportion of homes classified as non-decent and a higher proportion of older residential buildings.

CoRE will be located in what is currently a dilapidated Grade II listed building called Enson Works in the Short Street conservation area of Longton.

Chosen to help catalyse urban regeneration efforts across the town and wider surrounds, the site covers 4000m2 across three buildings and adjacent land.

An old, city council-owned building, Enson Works is ideally suited to becoming a ‘living demonstrator’ and to being retrofitted to provide the range of desired functions, within an architecturally impressive and landmark setting.

  • CoRE will be the first centre of expertise for sustainable refurbishment in the region. Across the country it will help raise the profile of the West Midlands region, assisting it in taking a lead and attracting national organisations, their expertise and resources  - such as BRE, Construction Skills and BASF.

  • CoRE will contribute towards energy efficiency, global warming, urban regeneration, community regeneration, innovation and knowledge transfer, business support and inward investment, employment creation and the provision of modern workforce skills.
