Veolia Environmental Services has been present in the United Kingdom since 1990. As the UK’s leading waste management organisation, the business employs almost 12,500 staff in waste management & cleaning and achieved revenues above £1.3 billion in 2008.

Established in 1999, Campus Veolia Environnement UK is the sole training and development unit for all Veolia Environnement UK subsidiaries. With a team close to 50 employees, Campus Veolia trained almost 10,000 employees in 2008.

Campus Veolia provides training systems aimed at developing employee qualifications in order to meet every new environmental challenge. These training programmes are written to national standards and are designed to help employees achieve group and national qualifications, diplomas and certificates. 

Seeking a programme that would increase the understanding, knowledge and skills of its workforce in sustainable development and the impact of environmental issues in a commercial context, in YEAR the organisation approached Staffordshire University for assistance in creating a flexible award that could be delivered in a way and at a level relevant to employees.

Matching course content to Veolia’s most specific needs, Staffordshire University adapted its MSc Environmental & Sustainability Management award to develop a highly versatile Foundation Degree that offered University-accredited learning at a level most relevant to the workforce.

Understanding the operational demands of the employer, Staffordshire University also implemented a programme of blended learning comprising of regularly spaced, one-week residential workshops followed by 8-10 weeks of work-based learning and assessment preparation, guided by distance-learning tutors and work mentors.
