Legislation
Discrimination on the grounds of age was first tackled in 2006 when the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations came into force. One of the aims of the legislation was to bring about long term cultural changes and to challenge stereotyping on the grounds of age. This legislation was strengthened and extended by the Equality Act 2010.
In April 2011 the default retirement age was abolished and will be phased out between April and October 2011.

We monitor age and report annually on progress in our Diversity Annual Report.

Retirement - There is no longer a specific age at which you have to retire. To discuss options available to you when you reach pensionable age please speak to your line manager or contact Personnel Services.
The University runs workshops on preparing for retirement. Contact the Centre for Professional Development for details.
Child Protection - For information on our polices and procedures for child protection (and the protection of vulnerable adults) contact the Student Office.
Work Experience - For information on work experience for 14-19 year olds at the University contact the Work Experience Programme Project Managers Jill Kirk or Jo Astley, or visit our Work Experience webpage.
Apprenticeships - The University is currently running a number of apprenticeships. Contact the Centre for Professional Development for details.
Work Experience for Disabled Adults - For information on work placements for adults contact Equality and Diversity Officer - Alison Hunt
Care Leavers - For information on support and accommodation available to care leavers while studying at the University email Elsa Heffernan in the Student Enabling Centre or telephone 01782 294517.
Mature Students - For information and support for students who are over 21 and have been away from school for at least 2 years please visit the Mature Student Support webpage.
Children on Campus - Children under 18 are very welcome on campus, in catering outlets and at the Student's Union. They must however be accompanied by an adult at all times. There are some restructions:
Ember Lounge, Stoke: no under 18s after 7pm
LRV at Stoke and Lounge/Legends at Stafford: generally no under 18's except at certain events, and even then restrictions may apply, depending on the event.
