Health & Safety Training

Introduction

Welcome to the Health & Safety Training Page

Health and Safety training is an essential part of the University's commitment to achieving a safe and healthy workplace for staff, students and visitors.

Staff must be provided with sufficient health and safety information, instruction and training to ensure that they are aware of the hazards in the workplace and know what safe working procedures to follow to reduce the risk of injury or work related illl health, to themselves and others.  Training is also essential to raise the level of staff and students awareness of University health and safety policies, procedures and practices and ensure their effective implementation.

Training Needs

The importance of knowing what health and safety training is needed is the key to the selection and design of workshops.  These needs should be assessed on appointment, when staff take on a new role with increased safety responsibilities, or new equipment is introduced.  Training needs should also be reviewed as part of staff appraisals, from reviews of health and safety performance and risk assessments.  These needs may be met by the Faculty/Services' own efforts or by that arranged by the Health, Safety and Environmental Unit (HSEU).

It is recommended that each Faculty/Service develop a health and safety training matrix for their particular area of responsibility.

Training Provision

Regular workshops are held covering first aid, manual handling, risk assessment and accident investigation (see Health & Safety Training Programme 2011/2012 (PDF, file size: 176.83KB) ).  The HSEU can also arrange specific workshops to meet Faculty/Service requirements.  Support can also be given in the form of coaching on a one to one basis, toolbox talks or safety briefings.

Online Fire Safety Training

The University currently uses Cardinus to deliver essential fire safety training which is mandatory for all staff and can be arranged for student groups on request.

Other Online Training

The University also uses Cardinus to deliver the following online training:

Health and Safety Essentials

Manual Handling

Safety for Line Managers

Workstation Safety Plus

Please contact hseu@staffs.ac.uk if you wish to do any of these online courses.

Training Records

The HSEU will maintain a database of training provided by the centrally.  A useful component in identifying staff training needs and competence is the completion, maintenance and monitoring of an individual staff safety training record.
