AirNet

Airnet is Staffordshire University's Wireless network service.  It allows staff and students with laptops or mobile devices to access selected network services without the restriction of having to connect to a network port.

The Airnet Service is available to all students and staff who have a valid username and password.

You need to have a wireless enabled laptop or mobile device that has a 802.11b/g wireless adapter installed. If you do not have a wireless adaptor, you can purchase one from the Octagon Information Services helpdesk for £20.

You need to ensure your laptop/device is configured with the appropriate settings outlined in the Airnet user document. You must be running up to date anti virus software and ensure that your operating system is up to date with all the latest service packs and updates. Once you have logged on you will have access to:-

• Email via the web mail service

AirNet is available at the following locations across the Stoke Campus 

• Ashley Lecture Theatres
  AirNet is available in each of the four Lecture Theatres with excellent coverage.

• Brindley Building
  AirNet is available throughout all areas of the Brindley Building at excellent coverage.

• Bush House
  AirNet is available throughout Bush House at excellent coverage.

• Cadman Building
  AirNet is available throughout the ground floor with excellent coverage in almost all areas. Cadman first floor has excellent coverage in most areas, with good coverage in a few rooms.

• Cadman - Pavilion and Courtyard
  AirNet is available in the Pavilion, Dolce Vita and The Courtyard with good coverage.

• Ember Lounge
  AirNet is available throughout the Ember Lounge and first floor Student Union offices at good coverage.

• Flaxman Building
  AirNet is available throughout all 6 floors at good coverage.

• Law Library (and Mezzanine)
  AirNet is available throughout the Law Library as well as the Law Mezzanine at excellent coverage.

• Leek Road Venue
  AirNet is available in the LRV in both seating areas and around the bar at excellent coverage.

• Mellor
  AirNet is available throughout the ground-fifth floors of the Mellor Building with excellent coverage in most areas, except for rooms at each end of the building where coverage is good. Some rooms towards the middle of the floors, especially on the ground floor also have good coverage.

• Thompson Library
  AirNet is available throughout the ground, first and second floors of Thompson Library with excellent or good coverage.

• Faith House
  AirNet is available at good coverage in all rooms within the building.

• Winton Square 1, 2 and 3
  AirNet is available with excellent coverage in all rooms within the building.

• Winton Square 4 and 5
  AirNet is available at good coverage in all rooms on the ground and first floors.

• Federation House
  AirNet is available at good coverage in all rooms within the building on the ground floor and the second floor offices.

• Dance Studio
  AirNet is available at excellent coverage in the meeting room and good in all other rooms within the building.

• Squeeze Box
  AirNet is available with excellent coverage.

• Sir Stanley Matthew Sports Hall
  Excellent coverage is available in the reception area and good coverage in the sports hall and surrounding offices.

Airnet Terms and Conditions

This policy is to ensure that the deployment of wireless networking is controlled and managed in a centralised way to provide functionality and optimum levels of service whilst maintaining network security. See Terms and conditions

Privacy Issues

Wireless networks can be susceptible to attacks from unwanted parties. Do not run clear text application which may have personal or sensitive data over the wireless network, for example online banking.

Protecting your machine 

To minimise the risk of unauthorised access to your computer across the network it is strongly recommended that you do not share any of your files or folders on your hard drive.
Performance – The wireless network only supports the 802.11b and 802.11g standards. The bandwidth on the wireless network is shared. Therefore the larger the number of users the slower the network connection becomes.
