Introduction and overview of the work of the Institute

‘Access’ is about widening participation in higher and further education to non-traditional learners, promoting equality of opportunity and encouraging lifelong learning and personal development.

The objectives of the Institute are to:

  • act as a focus for improving the research base and general understanding of contemporary access issues;
  • initiate, pilot, evaluate and implement new initiatives in access within the university and its partners as a developmental process;
  • undertake research in the field of access studies;
  • help provide ‘tools’ for national bench marking of good practice in access;
  • provide a forum for discussion and exchange of information and views on access to higher and further education;
  • improve the dissemination of good practice in access to higher and further education.

The Institute undertakes a wide range of work. Main activities include:

  • undertaking applied and academic research;
  • disseminating research and good practice through publications, conferences and seminars, meetings, networking and electronically;
  • encouraging scholarly activity in the field.
