Amy Clowes

Graduate story

Lucideon Marketing

Amy Clowes is Marketing Executive for Lucideon, an aerospace and defence materials development and commercialisation organisation in Stoke-on-Trent. The Staffordshire University alumna completed her degree in Marketing Management in 2015 and furthered her educational repertoire by completing her Masters in Digital Marketing Management while working full-time in 2018.

During her final year on the undergraduate degree, Amy joined Lucideon on a work placement and has progressed through the company since. With several offices in the US, Lucideon applies its materials expertise in ceramics, metals and polymers for a range of sectors, including healthcare, ceramics, construction, aerospace, and energy.

She said: “Our marketing focus is entirely business-to-business (B2B) and the aerospace and defence market is experiencing significant growth, with methods such as additive manufacturing becoming particularly prominent, so it’s exciting to develop campaigns from scratch, working with our colleagues in the US.”

Digital Marketing

Amy grew up in Stoke-on-Trent and attended Moorlands Sixth Form College, in Cheadle, achieving four A-levels. She then progressed to a Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeship at Leek College, where she worked in the marketing department.

“Leek College merged with Derby University in 2012 and many in our marketing department were made redundant, so I was looking at next level jobs and they all wanted degree level education,” Amy recalled. “That’s when I decided to sign up to the Marketing Management degree at Staffordshire University.

“Staffordshire was the best option for me because I was 21 and living and working locally. Before I graduated, in my third year, I got a work placement with Lucideon. They were looking for someone to be a market researcher and my previous work experience put me in a good position to get the job.”

After graduating, Amy became a Marketing Assistant at the company and started a part-time Masters in Marketing Management at the University of Derby. She switched to a full-time Digital Marketing Management Masters at Staffordshire University the following year, after completing one of three years at Derby, aiming to complete her degree faster while working.

“I couldn’t continue for three years at Derby so I spoke to my manager about going full-time at Staffs and they were very supportive,” she said. “I’m currently on the last module while working full-time at Lucideon. Because it’s digital marketing focussed, I believe it will make me more employable, as that’s the direction the whole market is travelling in.”

International Business

Graduating in July 2018, Amy is responsible for managing all of Lucideon’s aerospace and defence campaigns globally, with a focus on the US. She is also working with other sector marketing executives to manage the firm’s digital strategy across all campaigns.

She said: “My job may involve me spending some time working in the Lucideon US offices, which are in Raleigh, North Carolina, Greenville, South Carolina, and Schenectady, New York. As aerospace and defence is a growing market for us, I’m working closely with our US colleagues to gain a deeper understanding of our service offering, so we can get the message across to our customers.”

“Lucideon is very forward thinking, innovative and focussed on developing new technologies for a wide range of sectors. They’re always keen to expand into new areas and offer expertise in a number of different markets. There are lots of opportunities here as we’re growing all of the time, so it’s a great company to work for.”
