Applying for a Job

The JobShop guide to applying for part-time and vacation work.

General Guidance

Once you have registered to view vacancies online (see Access Jobs Online to the left) you will see that each job vacancy contains the job vacancy title, the employer's name, location, duties, skills and experiences you need to possess to apply for the vacancy, hours, pay and how to apply.

Please check the closing date for applications. Do not apply for a job vacancy if the closing date has already passed and seek advice from the JobShop if you are unsure about your suitability for the vacancy.

Each job vacancy states a method of application. You may need to telephone the employer to request an application form, apply online, send your CV by post / email or collect an application form from the Careers Service

Vacancies advertised by the JobShop can include those via recruitment agencies, and this will be clearly stated.  Ensure that you understand where and to whom you are sending your application/CV and make sure that you make a note of which vacancies you have applied for so that you can manage your responses.  Only apply for vacancies that you are genuinely interested in and ones that are practical for you to take on if offered.

Don’t forget to be punctual and professional.  The JobShop works hard at developing good employer relationships and needs to encourage them to advertise.  If you cannot attend, or are running late, it is imperative that you notify the employer.

Conversely, if you have a bad experience with an employer, come and tell us and if appropriate we will look into it or give you some advice.  If you don’t tell us, we can’t do anything about it!

Creating a CV

A CV is a document which summarises your qualifications and experience to date. Use our "CVs” leaflet to help you create your own CV and then get it checked by a Careers Adviser. Ask at the Help Desk in Careers to speak to a Careers Adviser, or to attend one of our regular Bitesize CV Workshops or CV Clinics - view our online diary for details.

Completing Application Forms

Use our “Application Forms” leaflet to help you complete application forms. Make a copy of your application form first to practise on. Then take it to the Help Desk in Careers and ask to speak to a Careers Adviser, who can check the form with you before you complete the original and send it to the employer.  You might also want to ask about our regular Bitesize Making Applications Workshops.  - view our online diary for details.

Interviews

Use our "Interviews" leaflet. You can book a mock (practise) interview or an appointment with a Careers Adviser to get advice on interview questions (ask at the Careers Help Desk).  You might also want to attend one of our regular Bitesize Interview Workshops - view our online diary for details.
