Mark Stiles

Professor of Technology Supported Learning

Co-Director - The Learning Development Centre

Following some 15 years as a Computer Science/IT educator and academic manager in Further Education in the UK, I moved into IT Services management in Higher Education in 1987.

From then until January 98, my job here at Staffordshire was, as Academic Development Manger, joint management of IT Services support of the academic effort of the University.

I am now, along with my colleague Steve Outram, Co-Director of the Learning Development Centre.

I have a long-standing interest, both as a practitioner and an educator, both in the use of Communications and IT in the teaching and learning processes and in its pedagogic aspects. I run a module on the use of C & IT in Learning for HE teaching staff taking our in-house Certificate, Diploma and Masters in Higher and Professional Education, and am also a member of the University's Learning & Teaching Committee.

I carry out research and development in all aspects of the use of Distributed Learning and Virtual Learning Environments and direct the COSE - Creation of Study Environments Project, an umbrella Project including some work funded by the JISC under the JTAP and JCIEL schemes, and home of the COSE Virtual Learning Environment.

Finally as a personal interest, which I hope is useful to others, maintain the CITAL pages.
