The BSc (Hons.) Football Coaching and Performance degree is an ‘Accelerated’ degree, which is delivered over 2 years, instead of the typical 3 for an undergraduate course. The course aims to provide aspiring football coaches from both the U.K and abroad with the opportunity to acquire the appropriate skills, and develop the specific knowledge required to gain employment in the football industry, both in the U.K and internationally.
This course is delivered by a highly motivated and well-qualified team of academics, as well as expert UEFA licenced football coaches. The course combines the disciplines of football coaching, F.A. coach education, performance and match analysis, as well as training and conditioning to enhance football players’ development and maximise their performance. The knowledge and theories developed from these disciplines will be applied to football coaching and ultimately put in to practice on the football field.
The course delivery is supported by our partners, which include the Staffordshire F.A., English Premier League (EPL) football team Stoke City F.C. and the Sir Stanley Mathews Coaching Foundation, amongst others. Therefore, incorporated in to your study will be a work placement which will could provide you with the opportunity to gain a valuable insight in to the inner-workings of a professional football club, or the development of football in the U.K. at a community level.
The opportunity to further your professional development by completing National Governing Body (NGB) and sports leadership awards, specifically those courses endorsed/delivered by the Football Association (F.A.) and their coach education pathway. Furthermore, you will gain insight and experience of using industry standard performance analysis software, for example Dartfish, Focus, ProZone, which are used within professional football clubs.
There will be delivery by experienced UEFA licenced football coaches who will share their knowledge and expertise, helping you to achieve your aspirations. Students will learn in an innovative, supportive and challenging environment with other aspiring football coaching practitioners.
Every student will need to undertake a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) screening check prior to commencing the course and undertaking any placement with the university’s partners.
This is a two year accelerated degree course aimed at both domestic and international students. The course combines aspects of football coaching, performance analysis, and football conditioning, whilst furthering professional development through a work-placement module with one of our partners, such as the Staffordshire F.A., English Premier League (EPL) club Stoke City F.C., or the Sir Stanley Mathews Coaching Foundation.

The purpose of this course is to produce graduates with a critical and in-depth knowledge of current issues relating to football coaching and performance. The course provides the necessary theoretical underpinning and practical competencies for individuals to work professionally in this developing area. The course requires students to study a range of disciplinary subjects within a football coaching and performance context. As a result of studying on this course, and the inclusion of the Staffordshire Graduate Attributes in to all course related delivery at Level 4, 5 and 6, the students will develop key transferable skills throughout their studies that will support them in all future endeavours/employment.
The work-placement module will provide you with 150 hours of experiential learning at a placement host. We are affiliated with a number of professional football clubs, non-league football clubs, and community coaching foundations, for example Stoke City F.C., Newcastle Town F.C., and the Sir Stanley Matthews Coaching Foundation. This is a key module in developing and demonstrating a readiness for the world of employment.
Opportunities are available during the course to undertake National Governing Body (NGB) coaching awards with our partners. These are increasingly important to football coaches as they are an industry standard benchmark of coaching experience and coaching skills. Students are strongly encouraged to undertake a range of NGB awards whilst studying on this degree to further increase their employability. The need for these qualifications will be identified through the Professional Practice in Football module.
Students who graduate from the Football Coaching and Performance degree can progress in to a wide-variety of job roles in the sector. Please see the graduate destinations section for examples of the employment prospects upon completion of their Football Coaching and Performance course.
Students who graduate from the Football Coaching and Performance degree can progress in to a wide-variety of job roles in the sector, these may include amongst others:
- Football coaches working in a football association accredited club developing football related skills, techniques and tactics of football performers. These posts are available world-wide, not just here in the U.K.
- Match analysts at professional sports clubs using state of the art performance analysis software (e.g. ProZone, Focus, DartFish).
- Strength and conditioning coach providing advice and training to performer’s who are looking to develop their sport and exercise skills.
- Entrepreneurs in sport and leisure, setting up their own companies delivering specific coaching services.
- Progression to teaching Physical Education (PE) by completing a specific post-graduate teaching course (PGCE).
- Progression to MSc in Sports Coaching at Staffordshire University for those considering post-graduate study.
