Postgraduate Application Form.
If you want to apply for a full-time undergraduate course you should apply through UCAS.
PGCE applicants should apply via the Graduate Teacher Training Registry.
UCAS
What is UCAS?
UCAS is short for Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. It is the central organisation that processes applications for full-time undergraduate courses at UK universities and colleges.
Cost of application
You can choose to apply to UCAS for up to five different courses. If you choose just one course at one university or college, the fee is £9. If you enter more than one choice in the course section your application fee is £19.
Before you apply
Before applying to UCAS, you should spend time finding the right course for you. When you are ready to apply to UCAS you should ensure you have the correct UCAS course code for your chosen course to hand as you will be prompted to enter this information online. It is important you choose the correct code and these can be found either in the University prospectus, the University website or the UCAS website. When applying online at UCAS you will also be prompted to enter an institution code and for Staffordshire University courses, this is S72.
Staffordshire University Regional Federation (SURF)
You can apply directly for the courses listed under SURF (Staffordshire University Regional Federation) through UCAS. These courses also have their own UCAS course codes. The institution code for SURF is S73.
The application process
For general enquiries, you can contact the UCAS Customer Service Unit at 0871 468 0468. This is open from Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 18:00 (UK time)
You can also email enquiries@ucas.ac.uk for an automated response with general information and guidance on the UCAS procedures.
- Deadlines
The normal closing date for applications is 15 January. If you miss the January UCAS deadline, don't panic - it is likely that we can still help you through our Admissions Office.
- Deferred entry
If you wish to defer entry to your chosen course for one year, we will still welcome your application. Please indicate your reasons for deferral on the application form.
- BA Awards in Art and Design
There are two application deadlines for art and design courses. Universities and colleges decide which deadline to use for each course - it will be either 15 January or 24 March. Art and Design courses at Staffordshire University have a deadline date of March 24th. If you apply for art and design courses with different deadlines, you can submit your application before 15 January for courses with that deadline, then add further choices before the 24 March deadline using UCAS Track (as long as you haven't used all five choices).
- 'Subject to validation'
The University reviews its courses on a regular basis to ensure that they reflect the needs of students and employers. To do this we have a schedule for approving new awards. Some are awaiting their turm in the approval cycle and are shown as 'subject to validation'. As soon as the award is validated, details will be amended automatically. For those courses which as listed as subject to validation, please contact the Admissions Office on 01782 292753 for confirmation that the course will be running.
- 'Course information'
The Staffordshire University website, the University prospectus and the UCAS website describe the undergraduate courses offered by Staffordshire University. On rare occassions courses may be cancelled or altered at short notice. Please contact the Admissions Office on 01782 292753 for course enquiries.
Next steps
What happens next?
After we have considered your application, we will write to you and notify the appropriate admissions service (eg UCAS or GTTR) of our decision. You will be given details of our Open Days and invited to visit us around the time you receive an offer letter. In some cases, you may be invited to attend an interview before we decide whether to offer you a place.
After receiving your results
However confident you are about achieving the results you need, things do not always go to plan. We recommend that you prepare for all eventualities.
If you do not meet the precise conditions of the offer we made you, it may still be possible for us to offer you a place on your chosen course. Contact us for advice as soon as you can.
The clearing process gives thousands of students a second chance to find a place in Higher Education. If you go through UCAS clearing and decide to contact us again, do so without delay and remind us that you applied to us during the first phase. Most universities prefer to consider students who made an application first time round.
PASS guaranteed offer
Students from Staffordshire, Shropshire or Cheshire are guaranteed a conditional offer for most courses under the Priority Application Scheme at Staffordshire (PASS) provided they:
- name Staffordshire University as one of their five UCAS choices
- meet the standard course entry criteria for their chosen named award
- apply to UCAS before the 15 January deadline.
The scheme applies to the majority of University awards, while applicants to Art and Design courses will be guaranteed an interview. Further information can be obtained either from your school or college Careers Advisor or Sixth Form Tutor, or from the Admissions Office at the University.
When to apply
Our programmes normally start in September, the sooner you begin the application process the more time you will have to make a well-informed decision. However, there's no need to wait until September to start your study, many of our courses run from February at the beginning of Semester 2. Call us on: 0800 195 1799
Entrance requirements to postgraduate programmes
The normal entrance requirements for taught postgraduate programmes are:
- an honours degree from a United Kingdom institution of Higher Education or overseas equivalent; or
- a postgraduate diploma or post-experience diploma recognised as being equivalent to an honours degree; or
- accredited professional or vocational experience in relevant areas of practice.
We welcome applicants who do not have a first degree but who have qualifications or experiences which could be accredited through the University's Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) or Accreditation of Experiential Learning (APEL) systems.
If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of six in IELTS or 550 (or 213 computer-based) in TOEFL, or the equivalent, is the normal requirement.
Research degrees
For a research degree, you will normally need a first or second-class honours degree. However, some of our successful postgraduate students hold other qualifications, such as graduateships of professional institutions. You may also be considered for admission if you have experience which demonstrates that you have appropriate skills and knowledge at a standard equivalent to first degree level. Specific or additional entry requirements are detailed in individual course entries.
You should apply for admission as early as possible before the date of entry, even if at that stage you have not been awarded your first degree.
Before submitting an application to enrol for a research degree, you should normally contact the appropriate Faculty or School to discuss your proposal. They will be able to advise you whether they have a member of staff with appropriate expertise to supervise your project.
You should then complete an application form and send it together with an outline of your proposal direct to the Faculty.
Disabled students
We welcome applications from disabled students. No applicant judged to be academically suitable will be refused admission on grounds of disability without compelling reasons. In this context, 'disability' should be taken as including any physical or sensory impairment or health condition, which could make it difficult for you to complete a course successfully, for example, diabetes or epilepsy.
It is important that you tell us on your application form of any impairment so that, wherever possible, we can ensure that we provide the facilities and support you need. Please apply as early as possible. For an information leaflet or informal discussion, please contact: Disability Advisory Service.
