Ceramics graduate

The Ceramic Design course at Staffordshire University is well respected both regionally and nationally for producing well-rounded designer-makers. It forms part of the the 3D Design programme and reflects a growing demand by consumers for unique, stylish, hand made or limited-edition design objects.

Supported and taught by experienced and specialist staff, who are practising designers within the major disciplines, our aim is to facilitate your development as an innovative designer-maker, who has strong individualistic, aesthetic and excellent making skills in preparation for the ‘real world’. This is achieved through a combination of set-projects, competitions, lectures, seminars and workshops.

The programme benefits from large well-equipped workshops in ceramics as well as wood, metal and plastic, together with digital imaging and IT suites. You will be shown traditional hand and machine making processes (plaster mould-making, slip casting, firing, throwing etc.) as well as the use of modern digital technologies for both the design and manufacture of objects relevant to your award.

3D Design: Ceramics

A key feature of the programme is its strong links with the craft sector. Through visiting lecturers, visits to cultural events, such as Collect and Origin Craft Fair, and collaborations with external organisations such as Craftspace, students become equipped with a current knowledge of industry practice.

Students have won nationally recognised awards such as: The New Designers Debenhams Future of Design Competition, Goldsmiths’ Company Precious Metal Bursary, V&A Ancestors of Dover Jewellery Competition and Pewter Live. Graduate destinations include: self-employment as a designer maker, teaching, community arts, museum and gallery curation, employment in design organisations and post-graduate study.

Graduates have set up their own businesses as designer-makers and been featured in nationally recognised magazines such as Crafts, Elle Decoration and Craftsman Magazine. Others have gained employment with design organisations such as The Crafts Council and Hidden Arts.
