What it's about
The BA(Hons) Accounting and Finance award is both a qualification in its own right and a stepping stone to a professional accountancy qualification. Students will develop practical accounting skills and learn to produce financial accounts and interpret financial statements. You will also develop skills necessary for management and financial decision-making in a modern business context.
What you do
During the first two teaching blocks you will follow the same study programme as students on the three-year degree. In Teaching block 3 you will study modules that are delivered by blended learning (a mixture of distance learning, combined with some face-to-face delivery). The topics you will cover over the year are designed to provide appropriate skills in the foundations of accounting and finance. These include: Financial Accounting, Economics, Law, Financial Services, Personal Finance and Taxation. There is also an option module that enables you to broaden your experience and provide a framework that you will build upon at higher levels.
During year two, course delivery will again be over three teaching blocks and will include such topics as: Advanced Financial Accounting, Management Accounting Techniques, Financial Reporting and Audit, Applied Accounting Software using Sage Accounting software) and Corporate Governance. You will also learn Research and Data Analysis skills in preparation for an independent research project.
Where next
Upon graduation you will be equipped for a career in the accounting and auditing professions, in the private and public sector.
The degree also provides excellent employment opportunities in a wide range of business-related and management roles, in areas such as financial services, banking, taxation, insurance and the public sector.
When you graduate you can apply to the one year Masters degrees in Business or PGCE, which means you can get and undergraduate degree and a Masters degree in three years.
