What it’s about

Applied Information Technology is the use of technology to enhance the speed and the efficiency of the transfer of information.

The area of information technology is part of the expanding field of computer science. It specifically covers the hardware and software associated with storage, management of data and the retrieval of information.

Included within this award is a foundation in computing skills. In-depth coverage of database design and information management is given. At Diploma level, students have the opportunity, with three option slots and the project work, to specialise in areas such as business information technology or technology for teaching and learning.

What you do

award has good coverage of programming languages but in recent times computing has come to also include networking and the software associated with data storage and information retrieval and management. The broad choice of computing modules, together with significant project work enables you to customise your award in your area of interest.

This award will equip you for a career in your chosen specialist area. Successful completion of your HND will also enable you to study for one of the following honours degrees:

  • BSc Applied Information Technology (Stoke)
  • BSc Business Information and Communication Technology (Stoke)
  • BSc Database Administration and Management (Stoke)
  • BSc Web Development (Stafford)
  • BSc Multimedia (Stafford)

The degree you can study for will depend on the route specific options you have chosen during your HND. Successful applicants will complete their degree after a further 12 months to two years study and will also have the opportunity to complete a work placement of between eight and 12 months.
