What it’s about

Electronic commerce is playing an increasing role in enabling business-to-business commerce, through dedicated electronic data interchange (EDI) and by exploiting the commercial potential of the Internet.

What you do

This degree course will give you a sound knowledge of how EDI and Internet trading works and how such systems can be designed for and fitted into modern business and e-government.

The first year of the course introduces you to a variety of IT aspects including analysis, design and development of systems, website publishing and hardware and network elements.

The second year extends your knowledge of user interface design and the interface between web pages and database systems. An optional one-year placement period can be integrated into your course or alternatively you may choose to undertake a shorter work experience module that develops your ability to apply IT solutions.

In the final year you will concentrate on the use of e-commerce systems as strategic resources. You will also undertake a major project that develops a prototype e-commerce application. There will be an opportunity to choose from a range of options in order to tailor your studies to your particular interests.

Further award and module information can be found here.

This award is part of the Applied IT Degree Scheme.

Where next

Your graduate destination is likely to be within an IT department which carries out a substantial part of its business electronically or within a firm which provides EDI or Internet sites and services. In many markets, electronic commerce is becoming the major way of doing business in the global economy.
