Biomedical Science
University Certificate
Key Features
This is a vocational qualification aimed primarily at
band 4/associate practitioner level for NHS employees.
This course was designed in consultation with the local teaching hospital.
Though a free standing award in its own right it can be used to progress onto the Foundation degree in Biomedical Science which in turn could lead to an accredited degree in Biomedical Science.
What It's About
The University Certificate comprises three modules which you would typically study over two twelve week blocks throughout the year (September to December and January to April). Click here to view flyer (PDF, file size: 96.26KB) .
The modules are:
Principles of Biology for Biomedical Science
Expectations of a Health Professional
Fundamentals of Human Physiology
What You Do
Principles of Biology for Biomedical Science will be delivered as a combination of student centred learning, tutorials (at the University) and practical based exercises will be scheduled to be delivered partly in the university and partly in your workplace under the supervision of your assigned training officer.
This module provides you with an introduction to cell biology and genetics which underpin all forms of life
You will be provided with guided reading which will provide the basis of discussions and questions in the tutorial programme.
The module will be assessed by five relatively short pieces of work designed to give you a regular opportunity to assess your learning and receive feedback and to demonstrate the application of skills such as data manipulation. Short class tests will provide you with early feedback on your progress.
Fundamentals of Human Physiology will be delivered by blended-learning that is, predominantly delivered remotely with a programme of tutorials in the University. Your first tutorial will introduce you to the virtual learning environment (Blackboard) and a further seven tutorials will support your learning.
The module introduces physiological processes at the cellular level which will enable you to understand the biological mechanisms underlying the development of disease.
Expectations of a Health Professional explores the professional autonomy, accountability and professional relationships of a health professional. You will demonstrate your understanding of these areas by providing evidence in a portfolio. This module is largely evidence based around your normal work activities. Additional tutorial support will be provided by University staff to help you to complete your portfolio.
Where Next
Opportunities exist both in Biomedical Sciences and in the private sector to utilise these skills.
The Certificate in Biomedical Science is a free-standing award in its own right. However you can use it to progress onto our Foundation Degree in Biomedical Science which in turn can lead on to an accredited Degree in Biomedical Science.
