This course develops technical knowledge of the materials and processes used in the brick, pipe and allied heavy clay industries. Suitable for new entrants and for existing employees seeking career development.
What is it about?
Provides an understanding of the principles of aspects of site operation and related off-site issues. Designed to increase the technical knowledge of people working in the industry. Study units include: Introduction to ceramics and ceramic science, Geology, Occurrence and properties of heavy clay raw materials, Winning and processing, Forming methods, Properties and testing, Statistics and quality control, Drying, Fuels, Kilns and firing and Packaging and distribution.
There is significant work based learning in the course and students analyse their own workplace procedures. Employers have reported that employees who undertake these courses are better able to anticipate and prevent problems. Feedback from graduates indicates that successful students have gained the confidence to initiate improvements at work.
