Certificate in Psychology

University Certificate

Course Aims

This programme aims to:

  • Offer you, if you are already a graduate in a discipline other than Psychology, an opportunity to gain a basic foundation in the core areas of Psychology, which is a necessary first step before enrolment on a subsequent Graduate Diploma in Psychology Course.  (Please note: This course is NOT the actual conversion course, just a 60 credit course that gives you the credits to apply to the Graduate Diploma in Psychology which is the actual conversion course. It is only the Certificate in Psychology course that is distance learning - The Graduate Diploma is NOT a distance learning course at Staffordshire University but is campus-based).

  • Offer a well structured and coherent distance learning experience, in a stimulating and supportive learning environment which caters for a range of student needs.

  • Enable you to develop a range of skills, both discipline specific and more general, which will prepare you for future honours level study in Psychology.

What it's about

  • Please click here to access the Programme Specification (PDF, file size: 60.28KB)

  • This is a flexible opportunity to achieve a basic foundation in Psychology and earn the 60 credits of Psychology which is a necessary entry criterion onto subsequent Graduate Diploma Conversion Courses in Psychology.

  • Facilitated by enthusiastic and well qualified staff, the course is delivered entirely by distance learning through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), over approximately 32 weeks.

  • The content is designed to feed directly into Staffordshire University’s Graduate Diploma in Psychology Conversion course and successful completion guarantees subsequent acceptance onto the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Staffordshire University.

  • Successful completion of this programme should also be acceptable to other Conversion degrees as an entry qualification.

What you do

The course consists of two compulsory modules which are followed sequentially and are normally studied over one academic year (Introductory Psychology and Introductory Research Methods). The course material is designed to closely mirror some of the introductory topics covered on the majority of three year BSc Psychology awards, and to introduce you to some of the key areas in Psychology identified by the British Psychological Society.  This means you will receive an appropriate foundation in key aspects of Psychology, which will help prepare you for further study in Psychology.

Please click here to view the Taster Materials (PDF, file size: 245.76KB) .

The modules consist of course notes, directed reading, and activities that are designed to extend your knowledge, and to encourage application of this knowledge to everyday behaviour.  You will access study materials, take part in learning activities, interact with other students on the course, and communicate with the course tutors via online discussion boards.

Assessment incorporates a range of methods including online tests, an essay, and research report.  Assessments are submitted online and online feedback is provided.
See link for some Taster Materials.

Staff support

The Programme delivery is supported by a team that has experience of innovative approaches to curriculum development, learning, teaching and assessment. The teaching strategy is designed to help you to become an independent and critical learner, equipped with the necessary skills to continue learning and developing completion of the course.
