More about the Faculty.

What it’s about

Computer science is the study of computers – the physical components (hardware) that make up a computer, the operating system that allows programs to run and the software (programs) that control what a computer does. You will learn how these work together and interface with the world outside the computer, to make computer systems such as desktop systems, games consoles, computer networks and intelligent controllers for production lines and aeroplanes.

What you do

In your first two years you will obtain a firm foundation in computing topics such as computer architecture, operating systems, networks, procedural and object-oriented programming, algorithms, systems analysis and design, and mathematics. You will study low-level and system programming and computer control and you will have a choice of further modules such as Software Development, Graphics and Forensic Computing.

If, like the vast majority of our students, you enrol on the sandwich degree, you will spend your third year on placement, applying your knowledge in the workplace and gaining valuable experience.

The final year introduces you to advanced subjects such as real-time systems, distributed computer systems, computer security and high-level computer systems design. You will also undertake a substantial project, which could involve solving a technical computer science problem or developing a computer system to solve a real-world problem.

Where next

With this degree, you will obtain the technical knowledge, skills and background to design, create and support many types of computer systems. A typical career could be as a Computer Scientist, Technical Support Engineer or Embedded Software Specialist.
