What our students say
"My time at Staffordshire University has been fantastic. The staff at the university always make time to help and offer you support if you need it. The courses here are diverse and interesting and everyone is made to feel very welcome."
Emma Ashby Final year, BSc(Hons) Computing Science
"I've always appreciated Staffordshire University's openness towards embracing diversity. The proposition of ideas that are off the beaten track is always encouraged. The learning process adopted is one of constant self-exploration and experimentation. This distinct characteristic has acted as a catalyst towards the emergence of dynamic ideas amongst students and has made learning both enriching and refreshing. Staffordshire University develops talents that think outside the box and nurtures skills that are transferable across all industries. I believe I stand as a testament towards an education system that works - trained as a Software Developer, I now work in Finance, in the Commercial Banking Division of a large multinational bank."
Eu Gene Thor, Malaysia
Graduate, B.Sc. (Hons) Computing Science 2008
"There is always the opportunity to be creative and show off your skills on the Computing degree."
Tom Franks, Final year BSc(Hons) Computing Science
More about the Faculty.
What it’s about
Computing is a vast subject. At Staffordshire University you can study Software Engineering, Computer Systems, Biometrics, Computer Security, Games Programming, Information Systems, Network Computing, Multimedia Computing, or Web Development, to name just some of the many specialised degree titles available. The Computing Science degree is unique in that it allows you to put together your own personalised programme of study from the wide variety of computing modules on offer.
What you do
In your first year you will obtain a firm foundation in computing topics such as computer systems and architecture, programming, and systems analysis and design. This will give you the basis to make informed decisions about your subsequent modules and therefore the direction of your course. You will have some choice, however, allowing you to explore some of the specialist subjects on offer.
There is a smaller set of core modules in the second year, with the rest being made up of a choice of modules.
If, like the vast majority of our students, you enrol on the sandwich degree, you will spend your third year on placement, applying your knowledge in the workplace and gaining valuable experience.
In the final year, you can take your pick of modules covering advanced computing topics. You will also undertake a substantial project, which could involve developing a computer system to solve a real-world problem in an area of computing that interests you.
Where next
It depends on what you choose to study. Computing Science graduates become qualified to pursue careers with computer users, software houses and manufacturers as software and application professionals or consultants. Typical job titles of recent graduates include Application Programmer, Web Designer, Software Engineer, IT consultant, Systems Engineer and IT Systems analyst.
