What it's about

This award is available as both a single honours and joint honours. It allows you to explore your own skills in all aspects of creative writing. It enables you to develop your own distinctive creative voice in the genre that suits you best, and to master the techniques to allow your writing to achieve its maximum potential.

What you do

View of lake

The aim of this course is to promote independent learning right from the beginning. In your first semester you will encounter some of the best journalism, poetry, drama and fiction. You will review fellow students’ work and discuss your writing within groups to sharpen your critical analysis. You will find that you are working with fellow enthusiasts eager to share their interests with you.

In the second year of the course you will be encouraged to be a little more experimental, while still working within the main literary genres, working closely with a tutor. The teaching is informal, in workshops and group activities.

In the third year you will develop an extensive project in a literary form of your own choosing.
A distinctive element of this degree is the opportunities it provides for you to gain work experience as part of your academic programme. In the second and third years, you can choose placements in schools, libraries, local newspapers and publishing companies.
