What it’s about

This course will provide you with an understanding of the complexities of database environments.
All organisations use databases and most internal databases are mission critical in that any problems have the potential to bring the business to a standstill. Anyone who has the skills and knowledge to prevent this and/or cure the problem will be a very valuable asset.

What you do

The first year of the course introduces you to a variety of IT aspects including analysis, design and development of systems, website publishing, and hardware and network elements.

The second year develops your knowledge of database environments, including both software and hardware elements.

An optional one-year placement period can be integrated into your course, or alternatively, you may choose to undertake a shorter work experience module that develops your ability to apply your knowledge to real database environments.

In the final year, you will concentrate on the use of databases as a strategic resource, including security and performance issues. You will also undertake a major project that relates to database development, operation and maintenance. There will also be an opportunity to choose from a range of options in order to tailor your studies to your particular interests.

Further award and module information can be found here.  This award is part of the Applied IT Degree Scheme.

Where next

Your graduate destination is likely to be as a Database Technician or Administrator, ensuring that the company makes best use of its data resources.
