Diagnostic Techniques in Immunology/Cytology Short Course
Certificate of Attendance
Key Features
This 2 day short course is CPD accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
The combination of theoretical and practical aspect provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in diagnostic application.
The Faculty has dedicated facilities including a state-of-the-art Human Sciences laboratory where practical sessions will take place.
What It's About
This 2 day predominantly ‘hands-on’ laboratory course has been developed to refresh or update knowledge and skills within the fields of Diagnostic Immunology and Cytology, perhaps in support of participants Continued Professional Development.
What You Do
Day 1 of the course will begin with a themed laboratory investigation where participants will measure IgA levels in an immunocompromised individual by the application of ELISA and Radial immunodiffusion. Critical evaluation will occur through the analysis and interpretation of the experimental results. Practical work will be supplemented by lectures and presentations.
Day 2 will begin with an introduction to the scientific basis underlying the techniques applied in Diagnostic Cytology. Participants will prepare and stain murine cells for examination using light and fluorescence microscopy. Microscope slides of dividing and non-dividing cells will be examined to identify cellular components, specifically chromosome visualisation and banding (Karyotyping). These techniques are applied in the diagnosis of inherited and acquired diseases such as Fragile X, Down’s Syndrome and malignancies.
Where Next
The theoretical knowledge and practical skills you gain from this course are in demand in the biomedical and biotechnology based industries.
