Economics of International Trade and European Integration

MA

Key Features

The courses are taught by distinguished professors from leading European universities

Recently, the high quality of this Award was confirmed when awarded 'Erasmus MUNDUS' status by the European Union.  This prestigious status is given to only 20 masters programmes in Europe (and to only two in the field of Economics).

A particular benefit of this status is that the consortium can offer Erasmus MUNDUS scholarships to students from outside the EU to cover fees and full living expenses.

What our students say

'Taking part in MA EITEI programme was an experience to remember.  In addition to giving me the opportunity to live and study in three different countries and gain valuable friendships all around the world, this programme offered a broad spectrum of subjects that, in my opinion, can meet requirements of students with different interests.  Interesting guest lecturers and discussions about up-to-date issues related to EU made this programme something more than ordinary studying of theory.  As well as broadening my knowledge of economics, thanks to this programme I was introduced to econometric analysis, which is necessary for scientific research, something that I would like to do in the future.  Hard work spiced up with loads of fun makes this MA programme a challenge that is hard to resist taking!'

What it's about

This Course is a unique programme in the UK Higher Education sector.  It is based on a special agreement signed by a Consortium of seven European universities and supported by the European Commission's Socrates Programme as well as Erasmus Mundus.

It covers analytical and research skills in economics, particularly skills relevant to business analysis, and the opportunity to apply these skills to specialist areas of international trade and european integration.  The teaching is based at Stoke-on-Trent in the UK, Antwerp in Belgium and Prague in the Czech Republic.  All modules are taught in English.

What you do

The first teaching block of this programme is taught at Staffordshire University and covers the important theoretical background in economic analysis that will be used in analysing applied topics covered in the second semester.  The second teaching block is spent at the University of Antwerp and Prague University of Economics (three months in each) where staff from partner institutions teach on the programme.  Students spend a significant amount of their studies on applying their theoretical  economics to analyse issues facing EU policy makers or policy makers in Central and East European countries which have embarked on transition to the market system.  The final part of the programme, the dissertation, is at Staffordshire University again.

The degree structure:

Teaching Block I:  Economic Analysis of the Firm 1, Macroeconomic Analysis, Research Methods in Economics 1

Teaching Block II:  To be taken at the University of Antwerp and Prague University of Economics.  There are a total of 60 credits.

Where next?

This bespoke award is suitable for graduates who have aspirations for careers in European or international organisations.  Many of our postgraduate students are developing high ranking careers in government, international organisations, business and universities.  For instance, in the last four years we have had students who are now employed in the National Statistical Office in Cyprus, with Deutsche Bank and IBM and who have had internships with the EU Commission.  Many have also gone on to register for PhDs.
