The BA (Hons) Education Award provides a development opportunity for those working in educational settings who have completed an appropriate Foundation Degree, such as the Foundation Degree in Education (Teaching Assistants), where you were engaged in work with children and young people. The aim of the award is to enhance your professional understanding and knowledge through academic study and professional reflection on experience.

What it's about

This course has been designed for those working in educational settings in full-time or part-time employment. Classes take into consideration childcare and travel arrangements. The course is arranged to follow school terms and endeavours to not have lectures during half terms and school holidays.

What you do

The course comprises of six modules which include: Educational Technologies; Contemporary Issues in Education; Educational Organisations and Management; Compulsory curriculum; Developing Educational Practice; Individual Research Project. A range of summative and formative assessment methods are used. End of module assessments include: assignment writing, presentations and exam. Tutor support is practical and considerate of students. Electronic support is high, supplied by tutors who reply to student email and a comprehensive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which provides you with a range of learning materials, from web links to lecture PowerPoint notes to discussion forums.

Where next

Many of you completing the award will pursue a career in teaching. Those aspiring to teach either in the Primary, Secondary or FE sector need to research the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) requirements for their sector and subject area - www.tda.gov.uk (for school teaching) and www.lluk.org (for post 16 teaching) are good places to start.

Successful graduates may also apply for Postgraduate Education Programmes at Staffordshire University.

Course Start: The course starts in September.
Course Length: It spans five school terms over two academic years, with 20 weeks of teaching in both academic years.
Attendance: Attendance is three hours per week. In addition there are a series of 5 Saturday Schools which must be attended. These are spread over the whole programme and dates are given in advance.
Entry Requirements: The course has been designed for those with an appropriate Foundation Degree, for example Staffordshire University's Foundation Degree for Teaching Assistants or Foundation Degree in Education (Teaching Assistants). However several students have enrolled on the course from other institutions with differing Foundation Degrees. Applications will be considered from students with approximately 240 CATS points, from a relevant course.

Application forms need to be requested from Staffordshire University Admissions: these will be processed and chosen applicants will be issued an interview date and time with a course tutor.

Successful applications will be informed by post after their interview.
