What it’s about
This award will give you a wide range of knowledge in the design and development of systems aimed at enhancing the learning process. The movement towards more flexible and efficient methods of learning has created a need for professionals who are able to use the capabilities of new technology in the development of such systems.
What you do
The first year of the award introduces you to a variety of IT aspects including analysis, design and development of systems, website publishing, and hardware and network elements.
The second year develops your knowledge of the theory and practice of learning and how to apply these to the development of suitable learning systems using web technologies and multimedia.
An optional one-year placement period can be integrated into your award, or alternatively, you may choose to undertake a shorter work experience module that develops your ability to apply your knowledge of learning systems.
In the final year, you will develop further skills and knowledge in the application of IT technology to learning environments. You will also undertake a major project that relates to learning systems. There will also be an opportunity to choose from a range of options in order to tailor your studies to your particular interests.

The award will equip you for a career in a variety of environments. School and college teachers need expert help in the development of IT applications, to assist their teaching. Commercial organisations are constantly looking for ways to streamline their approach to staff training.

| Course Length: | Normally three years without a placement and four years with a placement; up to eight years part-time. |
| Attendance: | Typically, a full-time student will have 16 hours per week of class contact time. In addition, you will need to spend time reading around the subject, researching topics, and completing assessed work. |
| Entry Requirements: | All applicants are individually assessed on their qualifications, skills and experience. However, a typical three A level or BTEC National Diploma offer will be 240 UCAS tariff points.
