What it’s about

This award is designed to prepare graduates for entry to those industries whose function relates to the operation and design of power systems, power electronic systems, energy utilisation and applications. It is also appropriate for companies involved with the manufacture or operation of associated electrical power plant.

The range of modules offered provides you with a choice of pathways ranging from a broad route in electrical engineering to more specialist knowledge in power systems engineering.

What you do

You will develop knowledge, skills and understanding in a broad range of principles, techniques and technologies.

Level 4 (first year of study) helps you to develop the skills and techniques used by all engineers and which are taught right across our entire engineering programme. This includes mathematical analytical techniques, design and theoretical principles.

Level 5 introduces modules in Electrical Power, Electrical Machines, Digital, Communications and Signal Processing to further develop your knowledge of principles, design and application. Options available include Instrumentation and Control, Environmental Impact and Effective Career Skills.
There is an optional industrial placement between Years 2 and 3. This will provide you with additional experience and further enhance your employability.

At Level 6 you will have an opportunity to study power systems engineering, systems and analysis. There is a major electrical engineering project as part of this year. Your options may include energy management, noise control and digital systems and your major individual project.

Part time students have the option to select modules that focus on project work from the work place.  This can reduce the amount of time that you need to spend in the classroom as well as reduce the length of study.
