What it’s about

Electronic engineering encompasses the design and application of electronic devices, circuits and systems, signal processing and communications. It is an inherent part of a wide range of artifacts and systems from CD players and computers to radar and aircraft.

Electronic engineering requires the understanding and application of sophisticated principles, techniques and technologies. In order to design an efficient and effective piece of equipment you must understand the underlying principles and be able to apply them.

What you do

You will develop knowledge, skills and understanding across a range of principles, techniques and technologies. Modules studied include analogue, digital and microelectronics as well as computing. As you progress through the course, fundamentals of signal analysis and communications are presented along with electronic systems, software and instrumentation.

Level 4 (first year of course)  helps you to develop the skills and techniques used by all engineers and which are taught right across our entire engineering programme. Mathematical analytical techniques are of particular importance to electronic engineers and this is a core component of the whole award.

Level 5 develops your theoretical base and builds on the design and application skills acquired in your first year.

There is an optional industrial placement between Levels 5 and 6. This will provide you with additional experience and further enhance your employability.

Level 6 will include your major individual project which may be drawn from your placement experience.

Part time students have the option to select modules that focus on project work from the work place.  This can reduce the amount of time that you need to spend in the classroom as well as reduce the length of study.

Where next

This award is designed to prepare you for a wide range of career opportunities in the electronic design, development and application sectors. It will also prepare you for further study and provide the educational base for application for professional registration with an appropriate institution, eg IET, IED. Graduates with exceptional abilities may continue their studies for a taught postgraduate MSc degree or onto postgraduate research for an MPhil or PhD degree.
