What it’s about
The music industry is at the forefront of the digital revolution. In recent years, the industry has changed the way that commercial music is recorded and also the way it is marketed. Music has, in some cases, become a ‘cottage industry’ where the recording of dance, rock, rap etc has been recorded purely on computer-based equipment, ignoring traditional ‘analogue’ based technology. Many artists are also promoting, selling and marketing their music through various digital media, in many cases, becoming their own record company and therefore maximising profits.
This course provides you with the knowledge to excel in many areas of computer-based digital recording and e-marketing, exposing the student to the latest computer-based recording systems including Digidesign Protools, Steinberg SX and Nuendo. You will also be able to develop skills in the design and implementation of e-marketing tools and strategies to enable maximum music industry
market potential.
What you do
The course is highly practical and you will learn about recording technology, studio equipment, synthesizer technology, recording systems integration and mastering. You will also learn how to create, distribute and implement multimedia to attract the maximum amount of commercial exploitation for music. The theme of media technology includes icon and time-based multimedia authoring tools and techniques as well as Internet/HTML programming and advanced multimedia scripting. There are modules covering music business and strategic entrepreneurship, and an individual project makes up a large proportion of the final year.
The music technology course has extensive resources including an 80 seat computer centre incorporating Cubase, Reaktor, Reason and Sound Forge, five traditional studios and three ProTools HD2 suites. The University also has ProTools accredited status enabling students to undertake a further recognised industry qualification.
Where next
Graduates will be qualified to work within the music, media and related industries providing technical solutions for sound production and quality in recording studios and digital videos. Graduates will also have knowledge and expertise in order to create their own music promotion companies within the e-environment.
