What our students say

“Thoroughly enjoyable, I’ve learnt so much, I would recommend it to anybody”

What it’s about

This course provides an in-depth and interactive study of film, television and radio, combining both academic and practical work. A critical and historical analysis of these media is complemented by practical work, such as scriptwriting, radio and television production and the use of the media centre production facilities and the radio studios.

You are encouraged to put your theoretical and historical knowledge into practice and acquire skills in research, presentation, scriptwriting, interviewing, recording, editing and mixing. This is supplemented by the writing of essays and reports where applicable.

What you do

Level 4 provides a broad-based foundation in media history, production and writing. You are introduced to methods of critical analysis, exploring the distinctive properties of film, television and radio and how practitioners and audiences use them.

Levels 5 and 6, place greater emphasis on group work and independent learning, with more extensive radio/TV production and scriptwriting projects available and a wider range of specialist options in such areas as live radio, television drama, sci-fi, cinema, TV, music industries, radio media, media performance, radio comedy, light entertainment and national cinema.

In the final year, you will complete a piece of independent research in the form of a dissertation, a film script or a radio/TV documentary or drama production. You are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and independent study. We use a variety of forms of assessment, including essays, seminar reports, log books, analytical exercises, practical projects and scripts. There are no formal examinations on this course and all work is assessed through coursework.
