What it’s about
This course will appeal to you if you wish to achieve an in-depth knowledge of forensic science alongside the social and legal aspects of crime. As well as studying and applying scientific methods to solving crime, you will expolre the effects that criminal behaviour has on society and how it is challenged by our legal system.
You will develop your knowledge of criminal law, justice and punishment and gain an understanding of the professional role of the forensic scientist and the criminal justice system in which the forensic scientist works.
What you do
At Level 1 you will study English criminal law and examine the effects that crime and deviant behaviour has upon society. You will explore the forensic process from the crime scene to the courtroom as well as studying the range of crime scene documenting techniques.
At Level 2, your core studies are in methods for crime detection, which explores many of the techniques available for the examination of evidence recovered from the scene of a crime, research and professional skills, further criminal law and the social and cultural aspects of crime, justice and punishment. A range of options is available to enable you to initiate some degree of specialisation.
Level 3 studies extend your understanding of forensic science and its professional context, together with a range of options from the legal and social aspects of criminology. You will develop your knowledge and practical skills of crime detection. You can then choose from a range of options, mainitaining a relatively even spread between forensic and criminological aspects.
Where next
A wide range of career opportunities will be available to you. Your scientific training provides opportunities in scenes of crime investigation, some laboratory environments, media and public service organisations. There are also opportunities in which your experience of the sociological and legal aspects of criminal behaviour will be of benefit, such as in the legal or advisory professions.
