What it's about
The Science Foundation Year (SFY) gives you the opportunity to enter degree courses in science if your qualifications do not meet our normal Level 1 entry requirements. This is a proven route to achievement with a long track record of success. Importantly, the SFY is tailor-made to prepare you for Level 1 of a degree in the biological sciences, or alternatively in forensic science or geography. This route is particularly appropriate if you have not studied sciences beyond GCSE.
Our approach to the admission of mature applicants and applicants from non-traditional or non-standard academic routes is flexible. Each application is considered individually. Staffordshire University recognises that previous experience gained in work or other areas of life may have prepared mature applicants for a course of study such as this.
What you do
The SFY is designed to allow you to achieve success in your chosen degree. It has a modular structure, giving you the flexibility to make an appropriate selection from a range of science modules on offer.
The SFY also contains core components which are designed to ensure that you have the key transferable skills (including communication, IT and mathematical skills) that you will require to complete a science degree. This combination of fundamental science and key skills allows you to obtain the breadth of expertise and flexibility required for success in your chosen field.
During the SFY, you will also have the opportunity to study a general option module in a scientific discipline at the Stoke campus of the University. Assessment in the SFY is by examinations, coursework and class tests, giving you feedback on your progress whilst allowing you to develop the skills required when tackling a variety of assessment types.
Where next?
The Science Foundation Year is designed to provide you with a smooth transition to the BSc(Hons) degree of your choice. However, it may be possible for you to transfer to one of the other science-based degrees available at Stoke. Please see the relevant entry in this prospectus for details of the subsequent three years of your course.
