2012 course information

What it’s about

Geographers study both human and physical landscapes developing an integrated understanding that is crucial to addressing many contemporary social concerns.

This flexible course enables you to study the full breadth of human, physical and environmental geography but as you specialise it will focus your skills and knowledge towards human geography. The course includes work experience and high quality training in essential workplace and IT skills.

What you do

Your Level 1 studies cover the breadth of both human and physical geography. Core practical and tutorial modules provide an introduction to field investigation, map work, data analysis and graduate literacy skills, and there are many opportunities for you to undertake fieldwork where you will put your learning in action.

At Level 2 you will develop practical skills relating to human and environmental geography, which you will deploy on a UK residential field course. At Level 3 you undertake either a dissertation or a work experience project. You will also extend and refine your practical investigative skills on a core residential foreign field class.

During Levels 2 and 3 you can select modules from various thematic areas of study including cities and sustainability, development geographies, healthy living or global citizenship. You can also combine these human geography themes with others from physical or environmental geography such as sustainable tourism, environment, technology and risk, planning for climate change or GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

Where next

This degree provides the skills and training suitable for a wide range of graduate careers. Past students are employed in the private, public and voluntary sectors in jobs ranging from geographic information systems and cartography practitioners to retail management and environmental policy officers. The broad-base of this degree also makes it an excellent choice if you are intending to move into a teaching career.
