What it’s about

These courses provide an intensive, full-time, accelerated-learning programme, which utilises the summer term and part of the summer vacation periods of the University calendar to deliver the three levels of our BA and BSc Geography honours degrees over two years. This is achieved by combining conventional campus-based learning at the University (autumn and spring terms) with on-line distance learning (summer term). You don’t have to be smarter or work harder on these awards – just use modern technology (in the form of distance learning) to make more effective use of your time at University.

On these courses, you study a broad range of human, physical and environmental geography, developing an integrated understanding that is crucial to addressing contemporary environmental and applied geography issues. There are opportunities for overseas-based fieldwork, work experience and high quality training in essential graduate and IT skills.

What you do

During the First year, Level 1 is delivered through conventional on-campus delivery with lectures covering both human, environmental and physical geography. Core practicals and tutorial modules provide an introduction to field investigation, map work, data analysis and graduate literacy skills.

An intensive summer school at the end of Level 1 introduces the on-line learning components of the first summer period. This consists of four modules that allow you to explore some contemporary issues in human, environmental and physical geography, plus an introduction to research project planning. These distance learning modules use an on-line virtual learning environment that allows you to access course materials and learning activities, receive tutor guidance and submit assessments whilst off-campus.

The second year begins with conventional teaching and learning back on-campus. During the autumn term, the remaining Level 2 modules are taken and these include further practical skills.

During the spring term of the second year, you will study four Level 3 option modules from the environmental, human and physical geography option list. You will also extend and refine your practical investigative skills on a compulsory residential foreign field class.

Over the final summer period, two further Level 3 modules are studied on-line. You are also provided with on-line support to enable you to conduct either a research project or a work experience project within the environmental, human or physical geography subject areas.

Where next

These awards have the advantage of allowing you to enter the workplace earlier than other degree programmes and provide the skills and training suitable for a wide range of graduate careers in areas such as geographical computing, environmental management, urban and rural planning and countryside management. They also enable mature students and mid-career professionals to improve their qualifications profile in an effective and efficient way.
