What it’s about
If you think you have the skills to understand business, communicate with others, organise, plan and develop computer systems, then this is an area where you will find employers waiting for you!
First you will need to understand computers and how they work – that is the technology bit. You will be taught the essentials of programming, as well as some basics on hardware, communications and networking.
However, the main focus of this award will be on developing your awareness of how organisations use and rely on IT systems to support their processes and procedures. Innovative use of IT gives organisations leading edge and contributes to their long term survival in today’s competitive world.
You will also learn about the people side of computing, leading teams, managing change, organising projects etc.
When you graduate you will be well placed to apply for any career as an IT professional, in a wide variety of organisations. This could include fields such as Advertising, Health, Media, Retail, Finance etc.
What you do
This course concentrates on alternative information systems strategies and techniques at Level 2, such as dynamic data interchange, service management and service oriented architecture, human computer interaction and usability plus areas such as professional and enterprise development.
In the final year you will have choices relating to advanced techniques, strategic information management, service science and project management and control.
Where next
Typical employment will be as a Systems Analyst, Database Manager or Web Information Systems Designer, each providing expert knowledge in conventional and alternative analysis and design methods, the design of databases and project management.
You will need to be a good communicator dealing with staff at all levels within an organisation.
