What our students say

"All of the journalism tutors are really approachable and they can’t do enough to go out of their way to help anyone, as long as you are willing to put the effort in. They are also genuinely chuffed for you when you get something published or when you achieve something good, that genuineness goes a long way." Leanne Sampson - National Magazine Sub-Editor

What it's about

Greg Dyke and student

You will learn a wide range of practical skills and knowledge essential to an exciting and successful career in journalism. You will work with a team of top journalism professionals and academics. The programme is built on the foundation of core skills, understanding and enthusiasm demanded in the news industry.

Practical modules take place in our dedicated journalism newsroom. It is air-conditioned and equipped with industry-standard Apple computers and software, including a live feed from the Press Association.

Throughout the course the focus is on combining theory and practice, in a lively and engaging atmosphere replicating the real world of journalism.

How does a joint honours award work?

You may study two main subjects or areas, leading to a joint honours award. The award includes two equally weighed subjects, e.g. BA(Hons) Modern History and English. Alternatively you can study one subject as a major and one as a minor, e.g. BA(Hons) Film Studies with Sociology, where Film Studies makes up approximately two thirds of your programme of study.

Initially, you simply select the award code for the two subjects, and follow a joint honours programme. You don't need to choose a major until the end of Level 1 (or, on some awards, Level 2) (Note: Legal Studies can only be studied as a minor subject). Choosing to study a joint award gives you the freedom to broaden your knowledge base and offers you space to choose the subject you wish to concentrate on. Studying more than one subject for your degree means you don't necessarily have to specialise - you can keep your options open career wise and gain more skills.
