What it's about
Journalism is all about news and information, telling the story, being as simple and clear as you can. Journalists discover news and report it. This award teaches these things - and more. It not only gives practical skills but provides a wide intellectual foundation. The media industry is rapidly changing with the web at its heart, and journalists, more than ever before, are operating across the different platforms of print, broadcast and online. This award will fulfil the needs of the industry by producing journalists who are multi-skilled with an ability to gather news and produce written, audio and video packages for the web.
What you do

You will learn the essential skills and knowledge which will allow you to work successfully throughout the course and in the industry, such as shorthand, media law, politics, ethics and regulatory issues. On the practical side, you will learn how to report news, including interviewing people, gathering facts, using contacts and writing accurate, crisp stories and scripts. You will receive technical training in the use of audio and video recording and editing, and learn how to package your products and publish/broadcast on the web.
You will work as a team on Newsdays to produce live news content for the web, both in semester one and two, while building up a portfolio of published articles for NCTJ and prospective employers. You will get the chance to enhance skills in more specialist areas such as advanced web skills, news editing, subbing and design, photojournalism and specialist reporting. As the award progresses, you will work independently and take on a major journalism project which will include producing a series of feature articles which can be adapted with audio and/or video for broadcast on the web.
To complete the postgraduate diploma, the course will run for 12 months from September to September. To complete the Masters, the course will run for a further three months to the start of the following January, which will be the deadline for the Masters Project.
Who will teach me?
You will be taught by top professionals with many years of experience in newspapers, online, radio and television broadcasting:
- Pete Leydon is an award-winning hard news and sports print journalist who was also news editor on two evening newspapers in the North West.
- Gary Hudson was the BBC’s chief TV reporter in the Midlands, and has worked for CBS, Sky Sports News and ITV Sport, including The Premiership and The Goal Rush.
- Sue Greenwood led the Hull Daily Mail’s e-media dept and worked on newsdesks in Stoke and Bradford. She runs her own online user-generated publication.
- Professor Mick Temple specialises in political journalism. He has published extensively on British politics, the media and political theory, and writes and broadcasts on current affairs.
- Sarah Rowlands has worked for many years for the BBC. She has won national and international awards including seven Sonys for her radio programmes.
