What it’s about

The single honours LLB Business Law degree will provide you with a study of Law, which meets the requirements of the legal profession (the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board) to provide exemption from the academic stage of training.

The LLB also provides exemption from the academic qualification part of the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX). The degree has been designed to encourage you to think critically about Law and to develop your skills in research and communication. It is, therefore, not simply about training students for careers in the legal profession.

By focusing on option modules in the field of Business Law you can prepare for work as a specialist in a Solicitor’s Office or in a commercial organisation.

What you do

The LLB core modules provide the foundation principles of legal knowledge. Certificate Level includes the study of legal sources and institutions as well as study skills relevant to Law, including the use of appropriate information technology. You will also study of some of the core modules. By the end of Intermediate Level, you will have covered all the core modules and so will have undertaken a detailed study of the Law of Contract, Public Law, Criminal Law, Tort, Land Law, European Law and Equity and Trusts.

It is the final year that makes this award distinctive, since the subjects that you study will be geared towards Business Law.  For example, you could study Commercial Law, Information Technology Law or Export & International Trade Law.

Whilst lectures are very important, the main emphasis is on the workshops and group learning. Workshops take a variety of forms: discussions, presentations by one or more students or tasks such as tackling a previously unseen problem or interviewing and advising a client. These develop both your legal capabilities and skills such as interviewing and working in groups.

Your study is supported by the Library and electronic resources such as the Internet and interactive computer-based learning packages. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination. Some skills, such as interviewing, may be assessed by video recordings of a practical exercise.

Where next

Students can progress to become Solicitors or Barristers. Many of those wishing to be Solicitors stay with us to complete the Legal Practice Course in our purpose-built suite of practice offices; others pursue a more academic route by studying on our LLM Masters awards. Alternatively the skills our students develop open up a wide range of careers, for example in finance, commerce, public administration or management in industry.

Staffordshire Law Graduates will benefit from 15% discount off the LPC tuition fees.
