What it’s about

The single honours LLB degree will provide you with a study of Law, which meets the requirements of the legal profession (the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board) to provide exemption from the academic stage of training.

The LLB also provides exemption from the academic qualification part of the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX). The degree has been designed to encourage you to think critically about the law and to develop your skills in research and communication. It is, therefore, not simply about training students for careers in the legal profession.

What you do

The LLB is accredited by the legal professional bodies, the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board. Years 1 and 2 of the degree encompass the core modules required by the professional bodies, allowing you to choose from a wide range of law options in the final year. Graduates may continue their studies onto our top-rated highly regarded Legal Practice Course or onto our taught LLM programme.

Core modules provide the Foundations of Legal Knowledge. Year 1 gives an introduction to learning skills. A workshop-based Skills module also runs throughout the academic year. Upon completing the second year of study, you will have covered all the core modules, including a detailed study of the Law of Contract; Public Law; Criminal Law; Tort; Land Law; European Law and Equity and Trusts.

In Year 3, you can choose either a wide-ranging set of options or focus on a specialist area such as: Sports Law; Employment Law; Healthcare Law; Environmental Law; Commercial Law; Family Law or Human Rights Law. Single Honours students can spend the first teaching block of their final year at a partner institution in Europe. Students can study in English and those with appropriate language skills can study in French. There is a grant from the European Commission towards the cost of travelling abroad.

Teaching comprises lectures, workshops and group learning all to help you develop work-based skills such as interviewing and working in groups.

Where next

Students can progress to become Solicitors or Barristers. Many of those wishing to be Solicitors stay with us to complete the Legal Practice Course in our purpose built suite of practice offices; others pursue a more academic route by studying on our LLM Masters awards. Alternatively the skills our students develop open up a wide range of careers, for example in finance, commerce, public administration or management in industry.

Staffordshire Law graduates will benefit from 15% discount off the LPC tuition fees.
