What it’s about

Mechanical engineering is the most versatile of engineering disciplines. It is concerned with the design, development and manufacture of products, processes and technologies. Its applicability is far reaching ranging, for example, from aircraft and electric hybrid vehicles to medical devices and wind power generation.

This award focuses on key engineering skills and gaining expert knowledge in areas such as mechanical design, analysis and modelling. In addition the award aims to provide a range of personal, technological and transferable skills, including problem solving and critical thinking, which are invaluable to many types of employers.

What you do

Level 4 (first year of study) helps you to develop the skills and techniques used by all engineers and which are taught right across our entire engineering programme. At Levels 5 and 6, your study will focus on the mechanical design process, materials, mechanical and fluid systems, business and programming. Optional specialist modules may include subjects such as Power Plant and Clean Technology.

There is an optional industrial placement between Levels 5 and 6. This will provide you with additional experience and further enhance your employability.

Level 6 will include your major individual project which may be inspired by your placement.  As well as using specialist knowledge, this along with underpinning modules, will provide an opportunity for you to be able to consider the legal, ethical and environmental impact of engineering decisions on society.

Part time students have the option to select modules that focus on project work from the work place.  This can reduce the amount of time that you need to spend in the classroom as well as reduce the length of study.

Where next

Mechanical engineers are able to find career opportunities in areas such as energy generation, water supply, construction, transport, medical technologies, R&D as well as in general product manufacture. The award also prepares you for further study and provides the educational base for professional registration with the IMechE and/or IET.
