2012 course information

What it’s about

There is an accelerated move towards high technology in industry and commerce. This means that the traditional demands on the mechanical engineer for analysis and design of components need to be enhanced. They need the ability to devise and implement the supporting systems for complex measurement, data acquisition and control.

The course will develop the skills required to design your own reliable and practical solutions and will enable you to provide a link to facilitate discussions between specialist engineers.

What you do

The award has been designed using a mixture of modules from the mechanical and electronic routes.
Level 4 (first year of course) helps you to develop the skills and techniques used by all engineers and which are taught right across our entire engineering programme.

Levels 5 and 6 expand the theme of working across boundaries so you will study electronic, mechanical and control systems. To reflect your own particular interests you will be able to tailor your award towards a mechanical or electronic flavour.

Level 6 includes a major specialised engineering project.

There is an optional industrial placement between Levels 5 and 6. This will provide you with additional experience and further enhance your employability.

Part time students have the option to select modules that focus on project work from the work place.  This can reduce the amount of time that you need to spend in the classroom as well as reduce the length of study.

Where next

As a multi-skilled engineer, you will have many opportunities. You will have the knowledge and abilities to take on roles where the combining of engineering disciplines is essential.

It will also prepare you for further study and provide the educational base to make application for professional registration with an appropriate institution eg IET, I.MechE, IED.
