Molecular Techniques Short Course

Certificate of Attendance

Key Features

A Practical Approach to PCR and Real time PCR as Diagnostic Tools.

This 2 day short course is CPD accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
The combination of theoretical and practical aspect provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in diagnostic application.
The Faculty has dedicated facilities including a state-of-the-art Human Sciences Laboratory where practical sessions will take place.

What It's About

This 2 day predominantly ‘hands-on’ laboratory course has been developed to refresh or update knowledge and skills within the fields of Diagnostic/Molecular Biology perhaps in support of participants Continued Professional Development.
This course will actively provide participants with an understanding of the terms and techniques through "hands-on" laboratory work, supported by lectures integrated into the practical component. The combination of theoretical and practical aspect provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in their diagnostic application.
The ratio of attendees to instructors is kept to the minimum to ensure adequate supervision is maintained, providing ample opportunities for one-to-one discussion throughout the course.

What You Do

Day 1 of this 2 day course will give you a theoretical and practical grounding in PCR based diagnostic methods in detection and mutation analysis.

It will incorporate basic PCR techniques and variations and modifications such as PCR based RFLP, ARMS and ACRS. There will be hands on experience of these techniques for example CYP genes (involved in drug and xenobiotic metabolism) will be utilised to demonstrate the detection of genetic polymorphisms.

In day 2 of this course the use of PCR to determine/type bacterial strains will be demonstrated. A scientist from Applied Biosytems will conduct discussions and practical work.  Real time PCR will be utilised to illustrate both the detection and quantification of pathogen load.

Where Next

The theoretical knowledge and practical skills you gain from this course are in demand in the biomedical and biotechnology based industries.
